What am I Paying For?!

Health Care Cost

The Two X Chromosome Penalty (blog.bioethics.net, October 2008)

SUMMARY: Even though women have narrowed the pay gap in many ways, there is one thing that it seems women will always pay more for. The fact that women use their health care more than men drive up the prices of the premiums.

TOPIC: Should the government arrange for hospitals to network to help standardize the cost of health care?

CATEGORY: Citizen

PUBLICATION INFORMATION: blog.bioethics.net, The American Journal of Bioethics is published by Taylor & Francis Health Sciences; the blog is funded in part by a grant from The Greenwall Foundation

AUTHOR: Summer Johnson, PhD

SUPPORT: AHIP, America’s Health Insurance Plans;

AUDIENCE & AGENDA: This blog targets women that think that they are paying too much for health insurance, telling them the reason that they are paying more than their boyfriend.

USEFULNESS: The photo breaks down all the cost of medical services. With the majority of the money going to the hospital and drug fees, there is a small risk fee that is taken into account for some. Many see this extra charge as an unethical choice on the insurance companies part.
